Northern New England Invention Convention 2021 Winners Announced
The Young Inventors’ Program® announces the winners for the 2021 Northern New England Invention Convention. The 35th region-wide event celebrated virtually once again and presented 69 awards to more than 100 competing students. “Our inventors tackled a wide range of problems,” said Tina White, Director of the Young Inventors’ Program (YIP). “From inventions that addressed our pandemic with ways to improve masks and remote school, to novel approaches to support animals or our environment, to ideas that are just plain fun, our students took the YIP challenge and pushed themselves in their design thinking.”
The Northern New England Invention Convention is the capstone event for nearly 4,000 K-12 students across the region who participate in local programs at schools, after school, and community organizations as well as independent students. It was a year full of innovation for YIP and their students, teachers, and mentors. “We took invention to new heights as we released new materials to support our teachers with hybrid and remote learning and help more students work independently,” said White. “We also became a partner program with the University of New Hampshire’s Leitzel Center where we look forward to new opportunities for growth.”
More than 100 students presented their projects as videos, uploaded inventors’ journals, and photos. Their projects were evaluated by 45 volunteers with expertise in science, engineering, and technology. The virtual event was hosted by emcee Hayley LaPoint, Meteorologist with WMUR and keynote from Emmy Kelly, Mechantronics Engineer at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory. Learn more about the event.

Less Sit To Stay Fit
* ISIF was developed to meet the growing calls from our students who don’t have access to a local Young Inventors’ Program site. These students motivate themselves to solve problems and advance through the program. This Invention Fair gave them the opportunity to present their ideas and meet their peers who love to invent too. This year’s independent students joined YIP from New Hampshire, Florida, and Colorado.
Students who were recognized with awards will progress to the Northern New England Invention Convention. This competition will be held virtually during the month of April with a celebration event on May 2nd.

Celebrating Youth Innovation
The 2020 Northern New England Invention Convention (NNE-IC) took to the internet for the first time in our nearly 40 years of youth innovation. Our original plan was to host the event on March 28th for 750+ people at Southern New Hampshire University. When the inevitable decision came to cancel the in-person event, we were heart-broken yet determined to give our young inventors a stage to present their ideas and celebrate a year of hard work. We knew so much had been taken from kids with schools, libraries, after-school activities closed that we could not eliminate the event entirely….so when we faced the challenge, we did what every inventor does with a set-back: we worked harder, used our creativity, and leveraged technology to come up with a solution!
Timing was on our side because our teachers, community organizations, and independent students had already completed their local invention fairs. Without space limitations, we allowed local program leaders to nominate more students to the NNE-IC. We extended invitations to 243 students to compete online by filming 6-minute pitch videos and submitting photos of their prototypes, display boards, and notebooks. We are pleased to report that more than half of the nominated students competed!
Thank You
Before the list of winners, we must thank very important people who made this year and the Invention Convention possible. First, our lead sponsors who fueled our finances as we kept the spark of innovation alive: Southern New Hampshire University, Topcoder, and Takeda. Without their support, we could not offer the Young Inventors’ Program to schools, libraries, clubs, organizations, and home schoolers for no cost.
We extend our thanks to all of the parents, siblings, family members, and friends who helped our young inventors film their pitch videos and upload materials for judging. We are also grateful for the judges who spent extra screen time to view videos and to meet by Zoom to deliberate. We had judges from across New England — and even one in Japan — contribute to YIP. And a standing ovation to Hayley LaPoint who emceed our awards ceremony and provided inspiration to our students and their families. This year’s Northern New England Invention Convention was truly a collaborative effort.
And now….the awards!

87 Winners Announced at 2019 NNE Invention Convention
April 12, 2019
The Academy of Applied Science’s Young Inventors’ Program® announces the winners of the 2019 Northern New England Regional Invention Convention. Held on Sunday, March 31st, 253 students from New Hampshire and Massachusetts representing 48 schools and STEM enrichment programs presented their original inventions. This was the 33rd regional convention celebrating the creativity and innovative designs of grade school students. “Our theme, FUNventions!, reminds us how far STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math) goes in shaping how we work and play to improve the world around us,” said Tina White, Interim Program Director. “Our program is powered by tireless educators who make learning a process of exploration and discovery to build self-confidence and problem solving skills that students will use through school, careers, and life.”
Making It to Regional Event
To qualify for the regional event, students in kindergarten through 12th grade competed at their local schools or enrichment programs focused on STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) to win slots on the regional level. For the past three years, the program has grown by 25% to include new communities, grade levels, and out-of-school enrichment programs. “We expanded into high schools because our K-8 alumni wished to keep inventing and organized clubs to bring YIP to their classmates,” explained White. “This desire to invent is a testament to how much students gain from the program and want to begin entrepreneurial endeavors early in life.”
And the Awards Go To…
Young inventors competed for 87 grade level and specialty awards presented by judges from the area’s technology, manufacturing, and health industries who also champion the program’s approach to learning. This year’s keynote speaker and veteran judge, Mike Morris, CEO for Topcoder and Global Head of Crowdsourcing for Wipro explained, “The Young Inventors Program empowers students to explore STEM, as well as their creative abilities as inventors and global citizens searching for the best way to solve a problem. Topcoder shares that passion for innovation and the inventions each year always impress. We’re honored to support communities throughout the region to advance STEM and life skills that will prepare students to excel in the future.”
