Getting Started with Canvas

CWEP has developed a list of FAQs that will be helpful in answering some of the most commonly asked questions about getting started and obtaining training records. If you do not see the answer to your questions here, feel free to reach out to info.cwep@granite.edu and someone will assist you within 48 hours during business hours (not staffed on weekends).


Log into Canvas using the email address and password you created when you registered for courses. Feel free to bookmark this link for future courses. Keep in mind courses will not appear on your dashboard until they open at 12:01 am on the Monday that they start.

Email Announcement from your Instructor

You will receive a Welcome Announcement from your instructor in the form of an email from notifications@instructure.com the morning the course is scheduled to start. This email will describe the course title and your instructor’s name. There is a link at the bottom of the page to View your Announcement. This link will take you directly to your course and into the Announcement section.

When you log into the course for the first time, familiarize yourself with the following:

  1. Course Overview – the course overview includes the course description and learning outcomes
  2. About your instructor – your instructor’s name and photo
  3. Canvas Help & Resources – resources and video tutorials about Canvas
  4. Announcements – announcements sent from your instructor including the Welcome Announcement
  5. Modules – Modules include readings, videos, discussions, quizzes, activities based on weeks or topics
  6. Grades – this is your grade folder where you can keep track of your grades
  7. People – class listing
  8. Inbox – this is the main communication tool between you and your instructor
  9. Calendar – has all the due dates for the course. The pre-course knowledge check will be the day after the course begins and all other assignments will be the last day of the course. These will also appear in your To Do list (to the right of the home page, pictured here)

If you do not remember your Canvas password (it is the same as the one you created when you registered), you may reset it in the WEBROCK registration system by using the forgot password link. Please explain in the "Other" option the steps you have taken and/or errors you have received.
Choose this response if you tried to reset your password and did not receive a reset code. OR If you cannot click on the link sent in the password reset email, copy and paste the link into your browser.
Choose this option if you are trying to register for a course but are unable to. Keep in mind, registration closes three days prior to a course start date (no longer accepting registrations). For all other issues with course registration, choose this option and explain in the "Other" field below.
Choose this option if your email address has changed and you no longer have access to your previous email address.
Choose this option if you are having the following Canvas issues: I cannot access or I need help accessing my course. I cannot find the Zoom link for my class. Please keep in mind: Courses only show up on Canvas dashboards the day the course starts.
Your training record can be found in the registration system via the unofficial transcript. Choose this option if you cannot find your training record or your traiing hours are not showing up on your unofficial transcript.
Choose this option if you missed a Caregiver/Kinship Pre-service Zoom session. Please indicate in the "Other" box below which session(s) you missed.
