CA Story: Elizabeth Wise

Elizabeth Wise

Why did you apply to be a CA?

I came to UNH in the Fall of 2020 after graduating high school at the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic. As a freshman, most of my classes were online and in-person extracurricular activities were slim to none. Entering college during lockdown was a tricky, yet unique situation that caused a rift in my connections on campus. I felt like I missed opportunities to form a relationship with my community. After living in the Gables my sophomore year, I thought I would enjoy being a CA and working and living in my community. I was craving the opportunity to bond with those around me and give more meaning to my UNH experience. I thought there was no better way to do that than apply for the CA position, not to mention the unmatched leadership and professional experience CAs acquire through the position.

What is the most rewarding part of being a CA?

The most rewarding part of being a CA is getting to meet so many fantastic and wonderful people who have impacted my experience at UNH. Working on the team of students and professional staff members the UNH Housing Department has developed has been life changing. Walking around campus, I see many CAs from other areas and when they give you a quick hello, it really brightens my day. I am able to learn so much from my fellow CAs that I never would have been able to otherwise. I am confident in saying I have made some friends for life in my co-CAs over the last two years. Additionally, CAs get the opportunity to form a unique connection with our residents. Having those small conversations in the elevator or at the mailroom with residents has made the day-to-day routine so much richer.

What is the most challenging part of being a CA?

As a CA, you never get to take off your CA hat. Walking to class, going out to eat in Downtown Portsmouth, or studying in the library, residents will always recognize you as their CA. You must be very aware of how you display yourself and what choices you are making in all aspects of your life since so many people look up to you and hold you accountable. This part of the CA role took some getting used to, but in the end, it has been awesome getting to be role model for my fellow students.

What advice would you give to somebody who is considering applying for the CA role?

I would say if you have the feeling you might enjoy being a CA, just take the leap and apply! The job might seem intimidating at first, but the managers do such a great job preparing you for the role. The interview process can be a lot, but if you have a strong idea of why you want to be a CA and let your personality come through, you’ll shine! When I applied to be a CA, I had no idea the tremendous impact it would have on my UNH experience, and it could do the same for you
