Have you had favorite electives that count toward the SDM?
One of the standout courses in my SDM experience was "Ecogastronomy." This course provided profound insights into the intricate relationships between food systems and sustainability. We had the opportunity to break down and analyze the processes involved in getting food from farm to plate. I gained a deeper understanding of the sustainable opportunities and risks involved. Another impactful elective was "The New Pirates of the Caribbean," which explored the impact of tourism on the Caribbean. This course delved into both the potentially damaging environmental effects and the potential for positive social change within communities. Furthermore, "Exploring Sustainability" offered a deep dive into the essence of sustainability, prompting me to realize its inherent integration into my daily life and igniting a passion to delve deeper into the subject. After taking the class I was inspired to pursue a major in Sustainability.
What has been the best part of the SDM for you and why did you declare it?
What I appreciate most about the SDM is the collaborative, multidisciplinary environment it fosters. The dual-major structure requires students to engage with others who hold diverse perspectives, enriching the learning experience. This collaborative approach has been invaluable, allowing me to broaden my understanding and appreciate the interconnected nature of sustainability issues.
Adding the SDM to my primary major was driven by a desire to align my education with my personal philosophy. The major not only allowed me to pursue a passion for sustainability, but also gave my work a profound purpose. I am genuinely excited about the prospect of building a career in this field, as I believe it will provide both personal fulfillment and a meaningful contribution to the broader sustainability landscape.
What experiences have you gained related to sustainability?
Participating in the B Impact Clinic as a student consultant was a transformative experience. This experience provided hands-on exposure to the B Impact Assessment, allowing me to apply this knowledge to a real business setting. I actively contributed to crafting policies and practices that enhanced the business’s sustainability metrics, gaining valuable insights into the practical applications of sustainable business practices.
Additionally, I secured an internship at Impax Asset Management in Portsmouth, a sustainable finance company. This experience provided a firsthand understanding of how sustainability seamlessly integrates into the realm of finance. Witnessing how investors can simultaneously create a positive impact and generate profits reaffirmed my belief in the potency of sustainable practices.
