At-Large Positions

Thank you for showing interest in joining the Memorial Union Board of Governors (MUBOG). Established in 1968, MUBOG has represented the diverse constituencies of the Memorial Union Building. As an essential part of the University of New Hampshire at Durham community, we welcome both graduate and undergraduate students to come forward and apply to be an At-Large Member of MUBOG.

In line with our mission statement and our dedication to assisting the Memorial Union and Student Activities, the Memorial Union Board of Governors holds several key responsibilities:

1. Space Allocation Process Management: We are entrusted with the vital task of overseeing and managing the allocation of spaces within the Memorial Union Building. This ensures that every space is utilized optimally, reflecting the needs and interests of the student body and the university community at large.

2. Influence over the MUB Fee: As representatives of the student body, we play a significant role in discussions and decisions related to the Memorial Union Building fee. Our aim is always to ensure that this fee is both fair and reflective of the services and amenities provided by the MUB.

3. Feedback and Support: At the heart of MUBOG's operations is the gathering and addressing of General Student and Student Organization Feedback. We prioritize creating an open channel for communication with students and listening to their concerns, suggestions, and opinions about the MUB. Additionally, we actively support student organizations, assisting them in navigating the resources and opportunities within the Memorial Union Building.

By joining MUBOG, you are not only becoming a part of a legacy but also taking on the rewarding challenge of making a tangible impact on the student experience at the University of New Hampshire at Durham.

General Membership of At-Large Members

The Memorial Union Board of Governors (MUBOG) holds seven distinct positions for At-Large Members. These positions play an essential role in representing the broader student body and ensuring that the Memorial Union Building continues to serve the needs and interests of students at the University of New Hampshire's Durham Campus. To qualify for these positions, applicants must be current students at UNH-Durham who pay the MUB fee.

The selection process for At-Large Members is precise and ensures equal representation. The application process is initiated during the first week of the fall semester by the MUBOG Chairperson and continues until all seven positions are filled. Each applicant undergoes an interview by the MUBOG committee. Following the interview, a two-thirds majority vote by MUBOG is required for the applicant's candidacy to be presented to the Student Senate for approval. Once approved by the Student Senate with a similar two-thirds majority vote, the individual becomes an At-Large Member.

Your Responsibilities

At-large members shoulder significant responsibilities. They must actively communicate with their represented student body, championing the interests of the MUB. Furthermore, they are expected to have an understanding of the MUB's various programs and activities. These members are restricted from holding positions on the MUBOG Executive Board or being a Student Senator. They are also mandated to attend all MUBOG meetings or ensure a well-informed proxy stands in for them if they cannot. This proxy cannot be another MUBOG member but possesses full voting rights and must be debriefed by the absent member.

The term for each At-Large Member lasts up to one academic year, starting from their confirmation date by MUBOG and concluding on April 30th of that same academic year. Lastly, it's paramount to note that MUBOG abides by a strict non-discrimination policy, ensuring fair representation and practices in line with the Students’ Rights, Rules, and Responsibilities.

MUBOG is truly open to all students (undergraduate and graduate), MUBOG is always looking for voices to help improve the Memorial Union Building.

Time commitment

Time commitment is a critical aspect of any role or responsibility. It refers to the amount of time an individual dedicates to a particular task, project, or role, ensuring its successful completion or continuous operation. For roles that involve teamwork, leadership, or representation, such as positions on boards, committees, or group projects, time commitment is essential. It ensures that responsibilities are met, goals are achieved, and the team functions cohesively.

Time commitments for MUBOG are usually 1-2 hours per week, MUBOG always respects time and understands the prior commitments of its members, especially given the demanding academic and extracurricular schedules that students at the University of New Hampshire's Durham Campus often have. Therefore, while the expectation is set at 1-2 hours weekly, MUBOG also emphasizes the importance of quality over quantity.

Time to Join!

Joining MUBOG offers an opportunity to play a pivotal role in representing the student body and influencing decisions related to the Memorial Union Building. With a weekly commitment of just 1-2 hours, members can make impactful contributions, all while balancing their academic and extracurricular pursuits.
