Why the Sustainability Pathway?

For students who want to shape their Honors experience around Sustainable Development Goals, the Sustainability Pathway provides a framework. Students complete the Honors Sustainability Pathway by dedicating about half of their Honors Units to sustainability-focused experiences.

The Sustainability Pathway includes:

  • Completion of SUST 401H: Honors/Exploring Sustainability (4 units) 

The following examples are provided to give an idea of how students can fulfill the Honors Sustainability Pathway. Interested Honors students should meet with an Honors advisor to make their plan.

Sample Path A


  • SUST 401H: Honors/Exploring Sustainability (4 units) 
  • Research Experience and Apprenticeship Program (REAP) with Sustainability focus (4 units) 
  • CLAS 540H: Honors/Environment, Technology, and Ancient Society: Sustaining Ancient Rome Ecology and Empire (4 units) 
  • Sustainability Summer Fellowship (4 units) 

Total Units: 16 

Sample Path C


  • SUST 401H: Honors/Exploring Sustainability (4 units) 
  • Environmental Advocate (1 unit x 2 semester = 2 units) 
  • SW 444A(H): Honors/Healthy Communities: Environmental Justice and Social Change (4 units)
  • Sustainability-focused Honors Thesis (4 units) 

Total Units: 14 

Honors courses with a focus on sustainability can be utilized towards completion of the Sustainability Pathway. Each course completed is worth 4 Honors Units. Below are some example courses that can be counted towards the Sustainability Pathway:

  • SUST 401H: Honors/Exploring Sustainability
  • CLAS 540H: Honors/Environment, Technology, and Ancient Society: Sustaining Ancient Rome Ecology and Empire
  • NR 435H: Honors/Contemporary Conservation Issues and Environmental Awareness
  • HIST 440J(H): Honors/Capitalism and Inequality in World History
  • SW 444A(H): Honors/Healthy Communities: Environmental Justice and Social Change
