CEITL Book Club was a 3-session series on a book related to teaching and learning. During each of the hour-long discussions we explored the themes from the book and how you might apply what you have learned in your courses.

Small Teaching: Everyday Lessons from the Science of Learning (Second Edition)

The second edition of the book is not available through ProQuest, but we do have multiple copies available through our CEITL Lending Library.

In this book, James Lang describes a wide variety of evidence-based learning activities that can be integrated in both face-to-face and online courses. The book is divided into three parts: Knowledge, Understanding, and Inspiration.

As we work our way through this book, we will discuss how the readings might relate to courses you teach.

  • Research-based practical tips on implementing activities in your course

As we work our way through this book, we will discuss how the readings might relate to courses you teach.

Fall Semester 2022 Book:

Distracted: Why Students Can’t Focus And What You Can Do About It

By: James M Lang

We will have an available copy of the book from CEITL’s lending library for the first eight people to register for the book club (unless you prefer to purchase your own copy). 

This book describes the issue of distraction among students. Lang discusses how we can better engage students by considering how they learn and building a less distracting learning environment. As we work our way through this book over the three sessions, we will discuss how what we read can apply to courses you teach.

Spring Semester 2022 Book:

Make It Stick: The Science of Successful Learning

This book describes the practical applications of memory and learning research from cognitive psychology. The authors discuss how we can teach students effective study activities that aid learning by utilizing what we know about how students obtain and retain knowledge. As we work our way through this book over the first three sessions, we will discuss how this might apply to courses you teach. During our final meeting we will explore the New Quiz Tool in Canvas and how you might use this tool to promote learning.
