Semi-Private Swim Lessons

Semi-Private Swim Lessons - Summer 2024

UNH Campus Recreation offers Semi-private swim lessons (with 2 participants) for children or adults that need individual attention, have special needs, learn better in a small environment, or have unique scheduling needs. Students must be at least 3 years old.

To enroll in a semi-private lesson, there must be another participant that will enroll. UNH aquatics staff do not match participants.

All summer lessons are held at the UNH Outdoor Pool. The UNH Indoor Pool is closed this summer. In the event of a cancellation due to inclement weather, a make-up lesson will be scheduled at the Outdoor Pool. A parent or adult student will be notified via email if a lesson is cancelled and rescheduled due to inclement weather.

NEW: The entrance to the UNH Outdoor Pool has changed. Access is now from the front of the Hamel Recreation Center (HRC), 5 Edgewood Rd, Durham NH. Pool users must check in with the HRC Welcome Center staff upon entering.

Semi-private lessons are 30 minutes in length and can be purchased in blocks of 4 or 8:

  • Block of 4 lessons = $90 per student

  • Block of 8 lessons = $160 per student

Registration Information:

The enrollment process for semi-private swim lessons is in two parts. It seeks to offer prospective participants an increased chance of being paired with an available instructor. It requires each participant's parent/guardian or adult student from the semi-private group to fill out a pre-registration form. This does not guarantee enrollment in a lesson. UNH Aquatics staff will accept students for semi-private lessons on a first come, first serve basis and pair lesson groups according to swim instructor availability.

Pre-Registration Instructions:

  • A parent/guardian for each student or each adult student completes the pre-registration form. This does not guarantee enrollment in a lesson.

  • If you are approved for enrollment based on instructor availability, you will receive a separate email from the Aquatics staff with further information on how to enroll and make payment. These emails will be sent after the pre-registration form deadline.

  • Aquatics staff will respond to families that have submitted a pre-registration form no later than 7 business days after the pre-registration submission deadline.

  • The Pre-Registration form for summer 2024 will be available on the following dates:

    • Friday, June 7 - Monday, June 10

    • Friday, June 28 - Monday, July 1

    • Friday, July 19 - Monday, July 22

The Pre-Registration Form:

To access and complete the Pre-Registration form:

  • Log Into your family account: Family Account Log In

  • Online Registration Instructions: please review before enrolling for the best outcome. Family Accounts are recommended for enrolling multiple children from one family in any UNH Youth Program. If you already have an account in our system, you will be asked to log into either a Family or Student Account. Be sure you know which type of account you have and know your username and password. We recommend you attempt to log into the Student or Family account before enrollment opens as this will minimize difficulty and time while enrolling. Email youth.programs@unh.edu if you require assistance recovering your account information. Do not create a new account if you have one already.

  • If you don't have an account already, you can set up an account at any time, even before you begin the registration process. When you create a new account, the email address provided in the profile should be that of a parent/legal guardian, not the participating student.

  • Once logged in, a portal drop down will open; click on ‘New Application’

  • Scroll until you find the “Swim Lessons: Semi-Private Pre-Registration” Application. Note: the swim lesson pre-registration form is only available on the dates listed above.

  • Click on ‘More Information.’

  • Click on ‘Apply Now.’

  • Choose the child you are completing the questions for, click on ‘Start.'

  • Once all required questions are complete, click the ‘Submit’ button.

  • If you are completing the questions for 2 kids from the same family, once the information for one child is submitted, repeat the steps for child 2 by going back to the steps above from 'click on New Application'

  • You will be asked to indicate an anticipated swim level during the registration process. Consult the Swim Level ChartIf you are unsure what you (if an adult lesson participant) or your child's swim level is, select 'unsure' during registration and our swim instructor will do a swim evaluation during the first lesson.

Additional Information:

  • A parent/legal guardian must be the person completing the pre-registration form for their child. It cannot be done by another parent/guardian.

  • You are not enrolling or making any payment during this process. You are only completing the pre-registration questions.

  • Both students in the semi-private group must complete the pre-registration form and provide another student name that you wish to be paired with. The aquatics staff does not match swimmers.

  • Swimmers should be of similar age and ability, have common goals, and have the same availability.

  • You will be asked to choose lesson day & time availability during the registration process. Please choose at least 2 days of availability. This allows flexibility for rescheduled lessons, if needed, to ensure the number of lessons purchased can be completed.  If both participants cannot commit to at least 2 days of lessons, we suggest that you do not submit a pre-registration application until such a time you can choose at least 2 available days.

  • UNH Aquatics staff will send notifications to those families they are able to accommodate for lessons. Further information and enrollment/payment instructions will be sent with the notification.

Do not enroll for lessons unless you have received notification from the Aquatics Staff to do so.

Lesson Information:

  • All lessons must be completed no later than Friday, August 16. Please take this into account when registering.

  • Lessons cannot be held on Wednesday, June 19 or Thursday, July 4.

  • Refunds are not provided swim lessons, including for any unfinished lessons.

  • All lessons are held at the UNH Outdoor Pool, 5 Edgewood Rd., Durham, NH. See above for information regarding Outdoor Pool entrance changes for 2024.

How Lessons are Scheduled:

  • Once both students that have been accepted for lessons have enrolled and paid, Aquatics staff will make contact with the parents/guardians via email.

  • Lesson days & times are arranged between the instructor and the parent/guardian once paired with an instructor.

Note: Swim lessons do not include admission to the pool for the day. Any family member(s) not taking a lesson who wish to swim and a child/student enrolled in a lesson who wishes to swim before or after the lesson must have a pool membership or pay the daily fee.
