From Corporate Career to Classroom Excellence

Russell Miles didn’t become an award-winning teacher overnight. In fact, he’ll be the first to admit that it was a process.

“Initially I wasn’t a patient or understanding instructor. I would go into class thinking my course was the only thing students had going on in their lives,” Miles says. “Over time I became more empathetic. I kept my standards high, but I tried to become more understanding of the challenges students may be faced with beyond the classroom.”

Former Correctional Officer Forges Career Helping Inmates Find Support

With nearly two decades of experience in the justice system, Blair Rowlett ’05 says she’s learned a lot about “the complicated and often tragic relationship between mental illness and criminality.”

Rowlett began her career as a correctional officer at the Strafford County Jail, where she spent enough time with inmates to learn their stories, to hear how they ended up where they were.

A Chicago native with 14 years of nursing experience, Ariel Roche is a first-generation college graduate. With the same fortitude of a nurse relative who became a female admiral in the U.S. Navy., she is forging her career path, sustained by a steady passion to bring skilled comfort to those in need.
