DURHAM, N.H. - Author and social entrepreneur Sam Daley-Harris will visit the University of New Hampshire Monday, Oct. 28, 2013, to discuss how citizens can make a difference in their communities and the nation.

The lecture will be held from 5 to 6:30 p.m. in the Strafford Room of the Memorial Union Building. The visit is sponsored by the Carsey Institute, New Hampshire Listens, Student Environmental Action Coalition, and Climate Counts. It is free and open to the public.

In his book "Reclaiming Our Democracy: Healing the Break Between People and Government," Daley-Harris calls on ordinary citizens to stand up, speak up and take action. Daley-Harris and the organizations he has founded or coached have been leading advocacy voices in three global movements: microfinance, which provides small loans for the poor around the world; child survival, which is saving millions of lives from malnutrition and disease; and climate change.

"The courage this book shows us how to unleash is our only hope to save creation for our grandchildren and for theirs," Nobel Peace Prize winner Muhammad Yunus said about "Reclaiming Our Democracy."

In 1980 Daley-Harris founded RESULTS, the citizen lobby focused on creating the political will to end hunger. He co-founded the Microcredit Summit Campaign in 1995 with John Hatch, founder of the Foundation for International Community Assistance, and Nobel Prize laureate Muhammad Yunus. He coached the founder of Citizens Climate Lobby in the months prior to its launch in 2007. In 2012, he founded the Center for Citizen; Empowerment and Transformation.

Ashoka founder Bill Drayton has called him one of the certified great social entrepreneurs of the last decades. "After building RESULTS, he is the person more than anyone else who has brought microcredit into focus across the world and precipitated action. One of his mechanisms has been a series of global microcredit summits. I think these are the first such UN-like events not run by the UN, or by any government for that matter," Drayton said.

Daley-Harris has received The Temple Award for Creative Altruism from the Institute of Noetic Sciences (1995), the Caring Award from the Caring Institute (1997), the Innovator Award from the Marriott School of Management at Brigham Young University (2003), the Elliott Black Award from the American Ethical Union (2003), and the

Susan M. Davis Lifetime Achievement Award from the Grameen Foundation (2007).
