Raymond Cook, professor emeritus of civil and environmental engineering at UNH, has been named the 2025 New Hampshire Engineer of the Year by the state’s engineering societies. The award recognizes his outstanding contributions to the field, dedication to education, and decades of service to both students and the community.
Cook recently retired after 31 years at UNH, where he was a beloved mentor and educator in structural engineering. Throughout his career, he played a key role in shaping curriculum, guiding students, and advancing professional development programs. His influence extends far beyond the classroom—many of his former students now hold leadership positions in engineering firms and organizations across the country.
“Dr. Cook was an excellent advisor to the entire class, always making everyone feel welcome and supported in the civil engineering program,” says Kelsey Page, a civil engineering student at UNH. “He reassured us that we would find a rewarding career within the field so long as we worked hard.”
In addition to his work at UNH, Cook has been an active member of the engineering community, contributing to organizations such as the Structural Engineers of New Hampshire (SENH), the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), and the American Concrete Institute (ACI). His research in concrete materials and structural design has made a lasting impact on the field.
Beyond academia, he has applied his expertise to public service, serving for more than 20 years on the West Newbury Planning Board, where he helped shape community infrastructure projects.
“Dr. Cook’s passion for civil engineering and his ability to inspire students is truly unparalleled,” says Anabelle Audet, vice president of ASCE-NH, who nominated him for the award. “His impact on the profession is immeasurable, and this recognition is well deserved.”
Dr. Cook will be honored at the Annual Engineers Week Banquet, where colleagues, former students, and industry leaders will celebrate his remarkable career and contributions to the engineering profession.
