At the first annual NH World Language Day, held on November 16, UNH hosted nearly 100 students from Salem, Portsmouth, Oyster River, Fall Mountain, ConVal, Alvirne and Lebanon high schools for a day of language activities and a chance to tour campus.
In collaboration with UNH Admissions, faculty and language students from the Chinese, French, German, Russian and Spanish programs facilitated activities, campus visits and lunch in Holloway Commons with the high schoolers, and shared information about the opportunities at UNH and in the Department of Languages, Literatures and Cultures.
“The excitement was palpable,” says one of the UNH organizers, Ileana Chirila, assistant professor of French. “Many students expressed an interest in continuing their education at UNH, and in keeping up with the languages they are learning in their institutions."
NH World Language Day was organized by the New Hampshire Association of World Language Teachers and the participating institutions. The event took place at UNH Durham, UNH Manchester and Plymouth State University simultaneously.
