Dr. Mary Schuh expanded her faculty role in the department of education within the College of Liberal Arts. Schuh has been with the Institute on Disability since its inception in 1987, working to coordinate family and consumer leadership and educational systems change. She has more than 30 years of experience in inclusive schools and communities and project management and has consulted extensively in the United States, Czech Republic, Slovakia, and the United Kingdom on issues related to supporting students with disabilities and their families in typical school and community environments. She has also authored and co-authored a variety of books and other publications related to inclusive schooling and served as the 2017/2018 Joseph P. Kennedy Jr Kennedy Fellow in the U.S. Senate working on the HELP Committee under Senator Patty Murray.
“Mary has made of career of building bridges across advocacy, scholarship, and policy,” says Kelly Nye-Lengerman, Ph.D., director of the Institute on Disability. “Her steadfast commitment to develop and support parent and advocate leaders through the NH Leadership Series has created a legacy of informed and engaged citizens across New Hampshire. By training and supporting others, she was able to create a movement that extends beyond UNH.”
Schuh's commitment to inclusion, extensive experiences, and knowledge makes her a leader within the university.
“In her short time in our department, Mary has made numerous, invaluable contributions in program and curriculum development. Her scholarship in and effective advocacy for more inclusive schools and communities is both inspirational and transformative,” shares Judy Sharkey, Ph.D., chair of UNH’s education department. “Mary has been a key architect in our new B.A. in Educational Studies: Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion, a degree dedicated to ensuring all elementary school teachers are committed to and capable of building and sustaining inclusive and equitable communities that enhance rather than limit human agency and potential. We are lucky to have her on our team.”
In addition to her role, Schuh was also selected to serve on the UNH Faculty Senate, where she will represent the College of Liberal Arts. She is also the most recent recipient of the Roland and Charlotte Kimball Faculty Fellowship, awarded each year to an outstanding member of the department of education who has demonstrated exemplary leadership in his or her field.
