On Saturday, May 11, in Richards Auditorium, members of the Beta Chapter, UNH’s chapter of the nation’s most prestigious academic honor society, Phi Beta Kappa, welcomed its new class of initiates. This was the 67th annual induction ceremony since the chapter was founded here in 1952. Sixty-one juniors and seniors accepted their membership by signing the traditional logbook, with many proud family members and friends looking on. A special welcome was given by UNH President James W. Dean, who encouraged the students to carry with them always the Phi Beta Kappa motto: “The love of learning is the guide of life.” Dean stressed the importance of foreign language study by offering his congratulations to the students in both French and Spanish. Students had the opportunity to have their photos taken with the original charter and the Phi Beta Kappa key, the society’s traditional symbol.
