UNH graduate student Alan Provance discovered his calling for teaching while serving as a Specialist in the United States Army. Through his time in the Army, Provance realized he could utilize his experiences to continue to serve and better his country through teaching.
“Teaching speaks to me because it’s a way of doing civil service,” Provance said. “I figured it was a way to continue to serve my community in an important way.”
During his service, Provance was awarded the Army Commendation Medal for performing his duties with “utmost professionalism.”
Provance recently completed his internship with Nashua High School South in which he has received praise for his hard work and dedication. Early in the internship, Provance was given the opportunity to take responsibility for developing the curriculum and primary instruction of a U.S. history class. He accepted the challenge with excellent results.
“Alan has worked to gain and maintain the respect of his cooperating teacher, students and internship school administration because of his patience, diligence, open mindedness and care for all,” said Kathryn McCurdy, director of field experiences and director of Manchester's Teacher Education program.
Provance chose UNH Manchester for its reputation, location and the opportunity to enter the Accelerated Master’s Program which allows qualified UNH students an opportunity to complete both a bachelor’s and master’s degree in as little as five years.
The UNH Education department prepares graduates to excel in the classroom and beyond. Graduates are highly sought after by New Hampshire school districts due to the rigorous training students receive while completing their full one-year supervised internship at a school.
