UNH Move in Day

UNH Move-In Day is almost here! Maybe you’ve imagined this day for years, or maybe you’re not really sure what to expect. Either way, it’s a good idea to make sure you’ve covered everything before the big day, and the #UNHSocial team is here to help you do that! To double check your packing list, check out this list we’ve put together of 15 commonly forgotten items, along with some tips to make sure you’re ready for your first day at UNH!

flashlights graphic

#1

A flashlight is a good thing to have in general, but can be especially crucial in your dorm room. They’re great for everyday purposes: Looking through your storage under your bed, or finding something in the dark while your roommate’s asleep. Additionally, your res hall’s power is bound to go out at least once during the school year. Ten points to Gryffindor for having one of these on hand when it does! Twenty points if you say “Lumos” as you turn it on.

floor pillows graphic

#2

Floor pillows are a must when it comes to dorm room hang outs. Nobody wants to sit criss-cross-applesauce on your cold tile floor, and when you get to the point where you have seven of your friends all duking it out for bed space after your desk chair is taken, you’ll be ready with this hipster seating alternative.

rain gear graphic

#3

Yes, even in the magical land that is UNH, it will rain on occasion. And no, “It was raining,” is not an acceptable excuse to skip class. Make sure you have an umbrella and some rain boots so you don’t have to spend your day looking like a grumpy wet cat. (If you don’t know what this looks like, google “wet cat” — it’s horrifying.)

first aid kit graphic

#4

Make your own college-ready first aid kit that includes Band-Aids, disinfectant, aloe, tweezers, anti-itch cream (for bug bites), cough drops, TUMs and some over-the-counter pain reliever. This kit is a life-saver (figuratively)! And for anything it doesn’t cover, you can always pay a visit to Health & Wellness.

reusable bags graphic

#5

Do the environment a favor and bring along some reusable shopping bags. When you head downtown to pick up Post-It notes, Cheetohs, and laundry detergent (or whatever else is on your dorm life grocery list), you can do it in style.

batteries graphic

#6

Batteries: You don’t need ’em, ’til you need ’em. Am I right, folks? Your TV remote, wireless mouse, electric candles, alarm clock and probably your roommate will all thank you for it.

cleaning supplies graphic

#7

This may come as a shock, but you will actually have to clean things on occasion. Namely, your dorm room. Don’t go overboard on this; some Klorox wipes, dish soap and carpet cleaner can go a long way! Bonus points for an air freshener and a To-Go stain stick.

business attire graphic

#8

As unappealing as it is, invest in at least one business-casual outfit. You will need one at some point, whether for an interview, job fair,or in-class presentation. You’ll save yourself a lot of time the night before, when you’re not asking everyone on your floor if you can borrow a navy blue blazer.

outdoor protection graphic

#9

Especially at the beginning of the fall semester, you’ll be spending a lot of time outside! At U-Day, Fall Fest and just hanging on T-Hall Lawn, make sure you’re armed with sunscreen and bug spray! Seriously. If you go to the outdoor movie night without bug spray, this will be you:

stand-up fan graphic

#10

Whether or not your dorm room has air conditioning, it’s a good idea to bring a stand-up fan for the one week before winter comes (a little New England humor for you there). Bonus points if it oscillates, so you and your roommate don’t have to take turns angling it towards your side of the room.

dorm snacks graphic

#11

As great as the UNH dining halls are, they do have to close sometimes. You can use your Dining Dollars or Cat’s Cache to stock up on dorm food at Wildcatessen and the Philly Cafe! Try to include some healthy options among your Doritos and microwaveable mac and cheese for when you’re snacking during your late night study sessions.

mini toolkit graphic

#12

You would be surprised how often you or somebody in your hall needs a screwdriver. Whether you’re a regular handyman (or woman, or person), or you can’t tell a socket wrench from a spud wrench, having a mini tool kit on your college packing list will basically make you the Ron Swanson of your dorm floor.

office supplies graphic

#13

This one seems obvious, but for some reason, buying a pencil sharpener rarely comes to mind when buying pencils. Be prepared for anything your classes will throw at you and stock up on paper clips, binder clips and push pins for your bulletin board. And — I’m only going to say this once — STAPLES + A STAPLER. You can thank me later.

AV cables graphic

#14

Make sure you have all the right cords and cables to plug your computer into your TV and your TV into your cable port, and to hook up all your Playstation Nintendo X-Cube nonsense.

shower shoes graphic

#15

And last, but not least, don’t forget your shower shoes! Any waterproof sandals or flip flops will do, just as long as they cover the bottoms of your feet when you hop in the shower you share with 12+ other college students.
