For this scholar of maritime history, grooming graduate students for careers in history has been highly successful. How do we know? Jeff Bolster’s former students speak glowingly of the care he took with their scholarship and the opportunities he provided, contending that they are better historians for having worked with Bolster.
But their achievements are perhaps the stronger evidence. Recent graduates have landed tenure-track positions at universities. They’ve published books with major presses. They’ve won national and international awards. To quote Bolster, himself, “the proof is in the pudding.”

In 2013, he received the prestigious Bancroft Prize for his gripping and eloquent history of the human impact on the ocean. He is also the winner of the 2013 Graduate Mentor Award.
