Jazz Migration

Monday, November 18, 2013

The theme for two of the Rockport (MA) Music Education Residencies this year, at the Shalin Liu Performance Center, is "Jazz Migration". On Wednesday, November 13, 2013, the UNH Faculty Jazz Sextet performed a long list of tunes by the greats, preceded by introductory remarks by Edward Gleason, Professor of Literature at St. Anselm College in Manchester, NH. Based on his article in Jazz Journal,  "Jazz and the Black Diaspora", the program explored the music of Freddie Green, Thelonius Monk, Fats Waller, Duke Ellington, Sidney Bechet, to name just a few. The Rockport High School Jazz Band, under the direction of Nathan Cohen and Anthony Covelli, kicked off the program.
