"Piazza del’Aringo Cathedral” by Alex Braille
Nineteen works of art created by students during a 2013 painting trip to Italy are on display in the Dimond Library. The collection can be seen now through March 2014 on the main floor (level three) of the library, in the reference area.
The paintings were created this past summer when students traveled to the city of Ascoli Piceno through a program offered by the art and art history department. Students spent five weeks painting five hours a day in and around the city. UNH has the only American program in Ascoli Piceno.
Curated by professor Jennifer Moses and Rick Fox, the paintings range from depictions of the architecture in the cultivated Italian landscape to nighttime views of the old city of Ascoli to abstracts inspired by the observed landscape. Ascoli Piceno is located in the Marche region, known for its medieval towers, travertine stone, mountainous landscape, and its two crossing rivers.
"Having an exhibit in the library is an honor for the student artists and a forum to share their talents with other students. Many students have no idea how strong our department is," Moses says.
Renovations to the Dimond Library two years ago helped create new space for such student exhibits. This is the first curated show since art work has been displayed in the reference area.
