Dear Colleagues—
It is with mixed feelings that I announce Marty Scarano will retire as director of athletics at the end of the current season after 22 years with the university. We will launch a national search for a new athletic director and Marty has agreed to assist in the transition process.
Under his leadership the privately funded Watkins Center for Student-Athlete Excellence opened, the department earned an NCAA Graduation Success Rate of 95% in 2020 and won the America East Academic Cup for highest cumulative GPA four times in the last seven years. The Wildcats have earned 60 league championships, produced more than 100 All-Americans, one national champion (Elle Purrier, 2018) and a national championship runner-up (men’s hockey, 2003). He championed the construction of Wildcat Stadium and the first phase of the Tucker Field project and elevated the university onto the collegiate national stage by hosting many major NCAA championships. In 2007, he was awarded the National Association of College Directors of Athletics AD of the Year for the FCS and named the All-American Football Foundation Athletic Director of the Year for FCS football in the Northeast region.
I am grateful for Marty’s strong commitment to the university, the athletics program and all our student athletes. Please join me in thanking him for his many years of service to Wildcat Country and college athletics overall.
