Bill Jackson '75 and Martha Foley '76
In spring 2004, UNH alumni Martha and Bill Jackson established the Martha L. Foley ’76 ’96G and William S. Jackson ’75 Fund for International Studies to encourage students to participate in a study abroad experience through the University of New Hampshire. Their passion for giving was inspired by Martha's junior year in France, which she credits as one of the best experiences of her life, and Bill's 26-year career with Tyco International, where he had significant global responsibilities and came to value the importance of international experience. Each semester, the Foley-Jackson scholarship offers $5,000 in financial assistance to students who demonstrate outstanding academic achievement, strong motivation and financial need.
Craig Abbott '70
Craig Abbott '70 has had a distinguished career in business and service to UNH, including as director of the Alumni Association Board. Perhaps one of his most profound legacies is the creation of the Endowment for International Studies in 2001, from which, thanks to his generosity, more than 40 students have received scholarships to study and do research abroad. "Based on what I have seen over my career in finance technology and the time spent with global clients and colleagues," Craig says, "I believe that an international experience, while at UNH, is essential to the education process for all students, no matter their major or future interests. Reaching out and taking the initiative to learn foreign languages, customs, cultures, new ideas, is the building block for a successful career no matter how you approach it."

Phurpa "Phil" G. LadenLa '59 and Sophie C. LadenLa established a significant scholarship for international students in 2001 and named it in honor of former associate professor of forestry Bertram Husch. Husch served as foreign student advisor during Phil's junior and senior years at UNH. He made foreign students feel welcome at UNH both as a group and as individuals and made them feel they could make a difference on campus. The Bertram Husch International Scholarship Fund is established as an expression of gratitude for the inspiration he provided to Phurpa and other foreign students through his compassionate encouragement and guidance.
