Boren Awards

Funds serious language study and/or work overseas for a summer, one semester, or a year for undergraduates and graduate students in areas other than Western Europe, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand. Focus on geographic areas, languages, and fields of study that are critical to U.S. interests and underrepresented in study abroad.

Deadline: Internal deadline in January; national deadline in February

Value: Maximum of $25,000/academic year. There is a service requirement.

Eligibility: U.S. citizenship; planning a study abroad experience in a country outside of Western Europe, Canada, Australia, or New Zealand that meets home institution standards; must also study a foreign language in the country of study.

Boren Recommended Steps and Timeline

  1. By November 15, 2024: Meet with Office of National Fellowships to assess eligibility for Boren Scholarship and discuss potential letter writers.
  2. November - December, 2024: Complete essay drafts and revisions
  3. January 6, 2025, 11:59pm: Internal Deadline for Boren Scholarship and Boren Fellowship
  4. January 15, 2025: Nominees notified
  5. By January 20, 2025: Nominees complete nomination agreement form.
  6. January 22, 2025, 5:00pm: Boren Fellowship National Deadline.
  7. January 26, 2025, 5:00pm: Boren Scholarship National Deadline.
