Your Guide to Residential Life as a College Student
Where will I live as a first-year University of New Hampshire student? What do I need to know about housing as an enrolled student? Here at UNH, college life happens on campus. As a UNH student, you are able to choose where you live, finding the residence hall and community that make you feel most at home. Read on for your guide to choosing and making the most of your new home on our campus.
How do I apply for housing?
After submitting your enrollment deposit, complete the online housing application by May 31.
Find a roommate and form your roommate group (even if it's just you!) by June 28.
Choose your room at your assigned time between June 30 and July 7.
How long will I live on campus?
Undergraduate first-year and transfer students who are under the age of 21 are required to live on campus for four semesters (two years). After that, you are welcome to continue living on campus, and many of our students do!
What is included with housing?
Living at UNH, you'll have everything you need to take care of yourself and feel at home. All of our residence halls include:
Furnished rooms
Microfridge rental program (available)
Utilities and Wi-Fi
Laundry in every community, with no charge per cycle
Lounge, study, and recreation spaces
Housekeeping for common areas
Maintenance support
ID access to buildings
Live-in professional and student staff
Access to award-winning dining halls
What types of rooms do you have?
First-year students live in traditional residence halls and most of our rooms are double-occupancy. A limited number of single rooms are available, along with some designated triple rooms. Suite-style and apartment-style housing options are not available to first-year students, but they are available after your first-year.
What if I need accomodations?
Housing accommodations for students with disability, health, and medical needs are available and you can apply for them through UNH Student Accessibility Services (SAS).
Gender inclusive housing allows students to opt in to sharing a room, suite, or apartment with someone of any gender identity. Designated gender inclusive communities are also available.
What is the best dorm?
There are multiple options for first-year housing at UNH, and we truly have something for everyone! As you look at options, consider whether you want a larger residence hall or a smaller one. Also, consider if you want to be in a building for first-year students only, or for multiple class years.
How do I find a roommate?
About half of first-year students have a roommate(s) identified when they select housing. Students find roommates in a number of ways. The housing application asks lifestyle questions to help you create a profile and find a roommate match. Some students also find a roommate from high school, social media groups, or nearby towns. Summer orientation is also a great time to find a roommate.
How will I stay safe?
All residence halls are accessed by student ID cards and staff are on call for any emergency situations. You will be connected to many campus resources while living in your residence hall. No matter what your question or concern as a UNH student, your residence hall director and resident assistant will be there to support you.
How will I find community?
Resident assistants put on weekly social events in residence halls, so you can meet friends and find community in your new home. All halls feature communal lounges and kitchens where you can hang out with your neighbors or cook favorite meals. Many students also get involved with intramural sports and student-led clubs.
How can I learn more?
If you have any questions about living on campus, feel free to reach out to UNH Housing & Residential Life. During summer orientation, you will attend a session on housing to learn more about what to expect. You will also have the opportunity to stay overnight in a residence hall during orientation to get a feel for UNH life.
