The NIKON A1R - HD Confocal microscope is available for researchers and offers extremely capable features for analyzing fluorescently labled samples of various thicknesses, including automatically optically sectioning relatively thick specimens to create 3D reconstructions or 2D projections. Unlike conventional fluorescence microscopes, it produces images using only fluoresced light emitted at the focal plane (that is, in-focus fluorescence). Out-of-focus fluorescence emitted from above and below the focal plane is discarded. This microscope, therefore, can be used not only with relatively thin specimens, but with specimens that would typically be too thick (≥ 50 μm) to yield sharp images on conventional fluorescence microscopes.
