Make a difference at UNH with a gift of stock
Giving gifts of stocks, bonds or mutual funds is one of the most tax-savvy ways to make a gift to the University of New Hampshire. Make an immediate difference to students and programs by designating your gift the UNH area where you wish to make the greatest impact.
Your gift of stock could go further than cash
If you have owned the shares for longer than one year, and if they have increased in value, you may avoid tax on the capital gains. Here’s an illustration:
- Suppose you decide to gift 100 shares of stock with a current fair market value of $5,000
- You bought the stock for only $1,000 more than a year ago
- Today, you can deduct the full $5,000 on this year’s income tax return -- the $4,000 capital gain is not taxed even though it has “inflated” your charitable deduction
- Avoiding the capital gain makes it possible to give stock at a lower actual cost to you rather than making a cash gift
Give privately held securities
Many executives and entrepreneurs find their most appreciated assets to be in the form of non-cash assets such as privately held C- and S-Corp stock, often with a low cost basis and significant current market value, resulting in large capital gains taxes when sold. By donating a portion of these highly appreciated privately held business interests to UNH, you can potentially eliminate capital gains tax liability on the sale and take a full, fair market value income tax deduction. Seek advice from your trusted financial advisors
A gift of stock made before December 31 of a calendar year may reduce your tax burden for the year you give. Your financial advisor can explain the possible tax benefits depending on whether the stock has appreciated or lost value since the time you acquired it.
