Graduate Faculty Mentor Award, 2019
Biological Sciences
Dr. Win watson joined the department of biological sciences faculty in 1978. During his 41 years at UNH, Professor Watson has been consistently recognized for his teaching excellence, particularly as an outstanding mentor and role model for graduate students. Among other honors, he earned the first COLSA teaching award back in 2013.
While Dr. Watson himself is steadily funded by the National Institutes of Health, Sea Grant and the National Science Foundation, he goes above and beyond to assist his students in securing support for summer research and conference attendance. Most recently, two of his students received awards for their presentations, one at the 2018 Benthic Ecology Meeting, and the other at the 2017 School of Marine Science and Ocean Engineering Graduate Student Symposium. What’s more, of his nearly 100 published articles, most are co-authored by graduate students. In the last 10 years alone, there have been more than 25 peer-reviewed publications co-authored by graduate students.
Dr. Watson’s presence has had lasting results, as almost all of his graduate students are currently employed in fields related to their degrees. He continues to collaborate with his graduated students, an effort that illustrates his dedication to lifelong learning. We are very pleased to acknowledge Professor Watson’s accomplishments with the university’s Graduate Faculty Mentor award for 2019.
