Benjamin Chandran

Benjamin Chandran is a professor in the physics department and a true Renaissance educator. With degrees in physics and history from Yale and a doctorate from Princeton, his credentials could take him anywhere. We are glad they brought him to UNH in 2005 to study the stars.

An inspiration to students who share his passion for research, Chandran has worked on several experiments for NASA missions and is an active researcher in UNH’s Space Science Center.

Chandran has an ability to teach the difficult and abstract concepts of modern physics, such as special relativity and quantum mechanics, in an interesting and coherent manner. He clearly cares about the success of his students who describe him as “engaged in class,” “very well prepared,” “very knowledgeable” and perhaps most importantly, “generous with his time.”

One student recently said, “Professor Chandran teaches an engaging and balanced course that prepares students for upper level physics … that makes it manageable.” His colleagues are impressed by stellar teaching evaluations, which serve as a standard for all our faculty.

The College of Engineering and Physical Sciences is fortunate to count Benjamin Chandran as one of our faculty. In the words of another student – not a physics major – “He was easily my best professor at UNH.”

About this Award
Each year, the University selects a small number of its outstanding faculty for special recognition of their achievements in teaching, scholarship, and service. Awards for Excellence in Teaching are given in each college and school, and University-wide awards recognize public service, research, teaching, and engagement.
