Environmental Horticulture Minor

A minor in environmental horticulture is designed to provide a flexible and broad selection of applied horticulture courses to complement any other major area of study. A MINIMUM OF 20 CREDITS IS REQUIRED.

PBIO 421, Introductory Horticulture (4 cr) is the core course required.

An additional 16 credits should be selected from the courses listed below:
PBIO 412, Introductory Botany (4 cr)
BIOL 601, Biology of Plants (4 cr)
PBIO 566, Systematic Botany (4 cr)
PBIO 651, Plant Pathology (4 cr)
PBIO 760, Insect Pest Management (4 cr)
SAFS 405, Sustainable Agriculture and Food Production (4 cr)
SAFS 410, Taste of the Tropics (4 cr)
SAFS 601, Fruit Crop Production (4 cr)
SAFS 679 or 680, Food Production Field Experience (4 cr each)
SAFS 689, Greenhouse Management and Operation (4 cr)
SAFS 731, Sustainable Landscape Design and Management (4 cr)
SAFS 795, Investigations (Horticulture related topics, 1-4 cr)

Up to 8 of the 16 credits may be fulfilled by TSAS (Thompson School) Horticultural Technology classes such as:
HT 404, Plant Propagation (4 cr)
HT 256, Horticultural Pruning (2 cr)
HT 257, Woody Landscape Plants (3 cr)
HT 258, Herbaceous Ornamental Plants (2 cr)
HT 266, Garden Design and Culture (2 cr)

Other electives can count toward the minor based on agreement with adviser or chair. Students are encouraged to discuss their intent to minor with the minor adviser as early as possible, typically no later than the end of the junior year. Not all classes are offered every year.

Certification of Minor
During the student's final semester, an application should be made to the COLSA Dean's Office to have the minor shown on the academic transcript. The student should fill out a Certification of Completion of Minor form and obtain the signatures of the student's major adviser, minor adviser, and the COLSA Dean's Office.
