They may not know how important the medical profession was to the first great detective. Doyle was himself a doctor, and he modeled Holmes on his medical school professor Dr. Joseph Bell. Holmes's detection is based on medical diagnostics, and mystery writing became popular just as modern medicine was becoming established. By examining Sherlock Holmes's detective in the context of Doyle's medical writings, this talk offers insights into the relationship between doctors and detectives.
