Housing, Hygiene and the Modern City: 1850-1940

Program Description:

Join architectural historian Hetty Startup as she explores some of the different types of buildings and new ideas about public space that emerge in the modern European and American city. Review and respond to a brief survey and discussion of images that depict urban living, describe architectural innovation or show off the multiple family dwelling. These topics will be considered as well in the light of contemporary debates in Victorian and early twentieth century cities about public health, housing and child welfare.
