This is Gross

Program Description:

Pathology is the “Study of Disease”. The objective of this program is to present the audience with a variety of “gross” pathologic tissues incorporating different organ systems, diseases and disease mechanisms. A discussion of the disease and gross tissues will ensue. The goals are to provide a better understanding of the body’s response to disease and what it looks like – the gross appearance. In this case the organs can be gross: “Slang; extremely objectionable, offensive, or disgusting”, but we are referring to the observation of organs and tissue without the aid of magnification. Participants will be challenged to 1) identify tissues (normal), 2) identify the pathology (abnormal), 3) describe the lesions, and 4) determine the cause of disease. We will then discuss the disease or any disease of interest. The program is designed to make the participant think, visualize and interpret what is in front of them; to figure out what the heck it is or imagine what it could be. This program covers issue and recent findings on a number of emerging diseases and disease outbreaks. Included, but not limited to discussion are the select agents, biowarfare agents and diseases such as avian flu, swine flu, bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE), severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS), the Arbo viruses and vector borne diseases (mosquito and tick borne diseases), monkeypox, and many other significant and/or common diseases.
