Health Management & Policy
Mont Vernon, N.H.

What made you want to choose this course of study?

I have always been interested in both healthcare and business. Health Management & Policy (HMP) allowed me to combine my two main interests. I also really liked the versatility of the degree; there are a number of professional settings where an HMP degree is favorable, such as hospitals, clinics, insurance, financial companies etc.

What stands out as your favorite course, project, or "learning" moment?

I think my favorite project was my health policy paper. My class partner and I researched ways to improve clinical quality in compounding pharmacies. This was a really cool class because we were able to research topics that we were actually interested in. Completing the paper was tough work, but it was also very rewarding.

What is one thing that has surprised you about the field you've chosen—something you couldn't have known in high school?

One thing that has continued to surprise me about health care is just how complex the field is. It's amazing to try and balance business success while caring for human life. You run into ethical situations all the time and it's such an interesting field to be a part of.

If you had to give advice to the next group of UNH students, what would you tell them about getting the most out of your studies at UNH?

First, I would tell them they have made a smart move as health care is the fastest growing industry in the U.S. Secondly, I would recommend taking advantage of everything HMP has to offer. There are organizations to get involved in, internship opportunities, career building days, and much more. I also recommend getting to know everyone within the major because those connections will be important in the future. Lastly I would tell them to enjoy it. It is not an easy major, but the work is rewarding and you feel accomplished when you succeed.
