Sean McDonnell of the University of New Hampshire was named the Fall 2013 Division I FCS Football Coach of the Year by CaptainU on Monday. Top coaches in their respective sports and divisions were selected for their teams' inspiring and successful performances both on and off the field.
McDonnell, in his 15th season as head coach, led the Wildcats to a 10-5 overall record, which included a six-game win streak, and a national-best 10th consecutive year in the FCS tournament that culminated in the program's first semifinal appearance.
Following a 1-3 start to the season, the 'Cats won six of the last seven regular-season games, including victories against nationally-ranked Villanova University, James Madison University and University of Maine.
UNH then recorded a 45-7 first-round win at home against Lafayette College followed by road wins against Maine in the second round, 41-27, and Southeastern Louisiana University in the quarterfinals, 20-17, to extend its win streak to six.
"We're proud to announce the Fall 2013 CaptainU College Coaches of the Year and recognize their outstanding accomplishments on and off the field," CEO Avi Stopper said in a CaptainU press release. "These coaches embody what it means to teach athletic skill and develop character."
McDonnell's other accolades include Eddie Robinson National Coach of the Year (2005), Eddie Robinson National Coach of the Year finalist ('04), Atlantic 10 Coach of the Year (2004), AFCA District Coach of the Year (2004, '05, '12) and Gridiron Club of Greater Boston College Head Coach of the Year (2000, '04, '09, '12). He has led New Hampshire to a 114-71 record in 15 years.
