This fall, as the leaves turn and thoughts turn to academic studies, be sure to take time to enjoy the many cultural activities available on campus.

 

On Friday, September 5 from 5-7 p.m. the Museum of Art will host a preview reception for two new exhibitions, Conley Harris: Lyrical Tableaux and Art Faculty Review: Benjamin Cariens, Brian Chu, Craig Hood, and Maryse Searls McConnell. Offered in conjunction with the exhibitions are ArtBreak programs featuring guest speakers, artists, concerts, theatrical previews and more on Wednesdays at noon. This month’s schedule includes lectures by renowned kinetic sculptor Arthur Ganson (Sept. 10), featured artist Conley Harris (Sept. 17), and the Norma Jean Calderwood Curator of Islamic & Later Indian Art, Harvard Art Museum, Mary McWilliams (Sept. 24). The 2008-2009 Faculty Concert Series opens Sunday, September 14 at 3 p.m. in the Johnson Theatre with a concert by pianist Arlene Kies including selected movements from Franz Schubert’s Drei Klavierstücke, D. 946 and Isaac Albéniz’s Suite Español. Also included on the program are Thirty Two Variations in C Minor on an Original Theme, WoO 80 by Ludwig van Beethoven and Modest Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition. Jazz pianist Mark Shilansky and friends will perform on Tuesday, September 16 at 8:00 p.m. in the Johnson Theatre. This performance is open to the public free of charge. Mark Kellogg, Low Brass specialist at the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, NY, and member of the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra, and pianist Joseph Werner will perform on Thursday, September 18 at 8 p.m. in the Bratton Recital Hall. This performance is open to the public free of charge.

On Sunday, September 21 at 3 p.m., flutist Peggy Vagts joins pianist Arlene Kies, soprano Jenni Cook, clarinetist Elizabeth Gunlogson, and bassoonist Janet Polk in a recital of chamber music by composers Camille Saint-Saëns, André Caplet, Mabel Daniels, Henry Cowell, Aaron Copland and Peggy Glanville-Hicks. This delightful concert takes place in the Bratton Recital Hall and is open to the public free of charge.

The Traditional Jazz Series begins its 2008-2009 Series with the return of the New Black Eagle Jazz Band on Monday, September 22 at 8 p.m. in the Johnson Theatre. Tickets priced at $8.00 general admission and $6.00 Students/Seniors, are available through the MUB Ticket Office or at the door.

For another rich, rewarding cultural experience, be sure to purchase tickets in advance for the Celebrity Series’ opening program, Elisa Monte Dance, on Tuesday, September 23 at 7 p.m. This year, the Series offers a complete evening package that includes a dinner before the performance option!  One of New York City’s most respected contemporary dance companies, Elisa Monte Dance will premiere a new work, Zydeco Zaré, choreographed by Elisa Monte and company members Tiffany Rea and Joe Celej.  The musical score is by Jonno Frishberg and features Jeffrey Broussard’s Creole Cowboys.  This innovative work is inspired by the style of folk music originating from African American and Creole descendants of freed slaves in southern Louisiana in the late 1800s and incorporates the syncopated sound and movements that are found in Zydeco.  This project was commissioned by the Performing Arts Society of Acadiana. On Sunday, September 28, beginning at 3 p.m. in the Bratton Recital Hall the New England Bassoon Quartet performs newly commissioned works by Berklee School of Music faculty composers. This performance is open to the public free of charge. www.unh.edu/music/

 

The department of Theatre & Dance kicks off the 2008-2009 season with the Broadway musical “Little Women,”  October 8-12 in the Johnson Theatre. Based on Louisa May Alcott’s classic novel, “Little Women” follows the adventures of Jo, Meg, Beth and Amy March as they grow up in Civil War America with their beloved Marmee. The much-loved story of the March sisters highlights four very different personalities forced to make it through tough times together while their dreams are tempered, twisted and often realized in unexpected ways.
