Kirsten Hutchison '06
and Derek Pouliot '06

Up to their shoulders in abstract mathematics, Kirsten and Derek searched for unexplored based rings and disproved Kaplansky's Conjecture using funds from a Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF.)

Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowships (SURF)

SURF grants a $3,500 stipend for ten weeks of full-time, summer research. Up to $600 of support for research expenses is also available. Your faculty mentor receives a $600 stipend. These grants may support research that contributes to a senior project or thesis. SURF recipients are not allowed to be enrolled in summer courses during the award period unless they receive prior approval from the UROP director.

SURF USA

You may use SURF awards on campus or at other research sites within the United States. The deadline for SURF USA applications is March 3, 2010. The application packet is available here: SURF USA application >> and in hard copy format in Hood House 209.

Please begin by reading the memo to applicants, which can be found at the beginning of the application packet; and by sharing with your mentor the memo directed to faculty, available here: Note to faculty mentors (SURF USA) >> and in hard copy format in Hood House 209.

SURF Abroad

SURF Abroad grants enable qualified undergraduates to carry out independent research at locations outside the United States. Research in other countries, especially where there are cultural and linguistic differences, requires careful planning over a sufficient period of time and special responsibilities on your part and that of your mentor. The SURF Abroad application describes these responsibilities and the special application procedures for this award.

Any student interested in applying for a SURF Abroad grant must first file a Confidential Reference of Student Conduct form to establish eligibility.  We advise downloading the form, completing the top part, and hand delivering it to the UNH Judicial Programs Office in Hitchcock Hall before you begin work on an application.  Doing so will quickly establish eligibility for students with a clear record, or indicate the need for a petition.

Note that any student sanctioned by the University Student Conduct System for a serious violation of the University of New Hampshire Student Rights, Rules and Responsibilities must petition his or her dean’s office prior to consideration for participation in a UNH-managed or UNH-approved study away program.

If you wish to use a SURF award to conduct research outside the United States, please submit a SURF Abroad application by January 13, 2010 for the following summer.

Students who are on a study abroad program in the same country in which they will be conducting their research may submit their SURF Abroad application to the UROP office by March 3, 2010.

Please begin by reading the memo to applicants, which can be found at the beginning of the application packet; and by sharing with your mentor the memo directed to faculty, available here: Note to faculty mentors (SURF Abroad) >> and in hard copy format in Hood House 209.
