Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowships (SURF)

Harju

Jolene Harju, Music Performance, and mentor, Professor Peggy Vagts

The SURF program offers a $3,500 stipend for full-time summer research (10 weeks for SURF USA, 9 weeks for SURF Abroad). Up to $600 of support for research expenses is also available. These grants may support research that contributes to a senior project or thesis.  SURF recipients are not allowed to be enrolled in summer courses during the award period unless they receive prior approval from the Hamel Center director.

Eligibility

SURF USA grants may be used for summer research on campus or at other research sites within the United States. Students must be at least sophomore status (in their second year of college course work) at the time of application for SURF USA. See application deadline, forms and instructions, below.

SURF Abroad grants enable qualified undergraduates to carry out independent research at locations outside the United States. (Please read "What is the difference between IROP and SURF Abroad" to determine which international program is right for you.) Students must be at least junior status (in their third year of college course work) at the time of application for SURF Abroad. In some special circumstances, second-semester sophomores may be permitted to apply for SURF Abroad.  These students must receive approval before applying.

Research in other countries, especially where there are cultural and linguistic differences, requires careful planning over a sufficient period of time and special responsibilities on your part and that of your mentor. The SURF Abroad Application Guidelines (below) describe these responsibilities and the special application procedures for this award.
