Eleventh Annual Summer Institute on College Teaching



Each summer, the UNH Graduate School and the Center for Teaching Excellence co-sponsor the Summer Institute on College Teaching. The Institute features a set of on-campus courses and a set of electronic, asynchronous courses that can be used toward the online Certificate in College Teaching. Course offerings for the 11th Annual Summer Institute on College Teaching in 2007 were as follows:

ON-CAMPUS COURSES :

GRAD 950 Issues in College Teaching--Credit: 2.00. CRN 30407.
Issues faced within the classroom including evaluation methods, classroom climate and diversity, instructional approaches, teaching and learning resources, and student behavior. Case studies. Cr/F.
Meets: May 22, May 24, May 30, June 5, June 7; 9-12 AM.

GRAD 951 Teaching with Writing -- Credits: 2.00. CRN 30241.
Examination of the issues, principles, and practices of using writing to enhance learning. Appropriate for all fields and disciplines. Participants design and field test assignments. Seminar requires field work and independent research. Cr/F. Meets: May 21, May 23, May 29, May 31, June 4; 5-8 PM.

GRAD 961 Cognition, Teaching, and Learning - Credits: 2.00. CRN 30190.
Cognitive theories and their application to classroom instruction. Examination of historical relation between cognition and education as well as current application of cognitive theory in the learning process. Cognitive skills involved in the learning process. Teaching strategies that enhance the use of cognitive skills and improve learning and teaching effectiveness. Meets: May 21, 23, 29, 31, June 4; 9-12 AM.

GRAD 962 Academic Citizenship-Credits: 2.00. CRN 30877.
Issues facing professors as a group within today's academic world. Topics include: defining "higher education" in contemporary terms; the variety of American academic institutions, their diverse missions, and associated career paths; the academic ethic; and the status of academic freedom in today's climate. Examination of the rights and responsibilities of the contemporary professor. Meets: May 24, May 29, May 30, May 31, June 5; 1-4 PM.

ONLINE COURSES:

The following courses are offered using modules that require asynchronous discussions beginning May 22 and ending in early July with course projects due on or before July 15:

GRAD 941 Teaching Methods in Higher Education - Credits: 2.00. CRN 30242.
Formal consideration of specific teaching methods including the lecture, class discussion, and writing. The selection and use of specific teaching methods to achieve desired learning outcomes.

GRAD 942 The Role of the Professor - Credits: 2.00. CRN 30408.
Formal consideration of the perspectives of major scholars related to teaching, the role of the professor as teacher and scholar and the multiple cultures encountered in higher education.

GRAD 965 Classroom Research and Assessment Methods-Credits: 2.00. CRN 30498.
Examination of methods used in classroom assessment and classroom research. The focus is on the improvement of teaching and learning in a teacher's own classroom. Research project is required. Prereq: permission.

GRAD 980 - Preparing to Teach a Psychology Course - Credits: 2.00. CRN 30001.
Preparation for teaching in psychology. Examination of issues and models involving course design and interaction with students. Products from the course will include a complete course syllabus, a preliminary statement of teaching philosophy, and a teaching module for a course.

For students enrolled in the Certificate, Cognate, or M.S.T. program. Permission required.

GRAD 945-Advanced Seminar in College Teaching

GRAD 990 - College Teaching Praxis Credits: 3.00 to 4.00.
Formal experience in teaching a college level course. Development of a teaching portfolio. Prereq: permission. May be repeated for a maximum of 12 credits.

GRAD 995 - Independent Study Credits: 1.00 to 4.00.
Faculty supervised independent studies in college teaching. Prereq: permission. May be repeated to a maximum of 12 credits.

Tuition and Fees
The Summer, 2007 per-credit rate for non-degree students is $273 for in-state and $301 for out-of state plus a $20 registration fee and a $13.00 technology fee. The total cost of a 2-credit course is: $579 in-state; $635 out-of-state. For on-campus courses only there is a one-time Summer fee of $98--not applicable to online courses.
