State-of-the-Art Lecture Series Presents Willem deVries Nov. 14

Willem deVries, professor of philosophy, will present the lecture “The Qualities of Consciousness” Monday, Nov. 14, from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. in Holloway Commons. The talk begins with a reception and concludes with a question and answer session.

Says deVries, “For hundreds of years the realm of conscious experiences has seemed radically different from the mechanical realm of material objects. The common assumption was that bodies and minds are different and separable things, though somehow connected.  In the past couple of decades, however, the arguments about the possibility of bridging the gap between conscious experience and our underlying physical or physiological reality have intensified. What cases have been made for and against the claim that consciousness itself is something physical and scientifically explainable?”

The State-of-the-Art Lecture Series is designed to share exciting and current developments in a variety of fields with the UNH community.

Sponsored by the Office of the Provost, The Humanities Program and The UNH Faculty Senate.
