With the upcoming winter season fast approaching, the UNH Police Department’s division of emergency management stresses the importance of having a plan in the event of an emergency. Part of that plan should include an emergency kit with enough supplies to last 72 hours.

The kit should include such items as vital documents, medical records, favorite photos, important telephone numbers/addresses and maps. Placing information on a DVD or thumb drive saves space.  Adjust your list of kit items and extra clothing to meet personal needs, local circumstances, and weather conditions.

Have your kit ready to go on a moment’s notice, and make sure it is something you can easily carry. Decide ahead of time what you would do about pets and security for your home or office should disaster strike.

Know in advance the safe area near you that you would relocate to and how you would locate missing family members or others.

Planning for evacuation during a major disaster requires advance planning and adequate preparations in order to reduce losses of all types.
