Healthy UNH has partnered with Dining Services in a combined effort to highlight the healthy eating options that can be found in the many dining locations around campus.
Soon, a new symbol will appear in Albert's, Panache, Philbrook Cafe, Wildcatessen, UNH Dairy Bar, Union Court, and Zeke's, letting diners know about healthy choices.
The Guiding Stars symbol will continue to mark those foods at Holloway Commons, Philbrook, and Stillings.
For a food to receive either designation, it must have 500 or fewer calories, 0 gram of trans fat, 5 grams or less of saturated fat, 600 mg or less of sodium and 3 grams of fiber or more.
The Guiding Stars logo rates food using zero to three stars based on nutritional value according to the recommendations of the FDA and the USDA. Foods high in fiber, vitamins, minerals and whole grains receive one to three stars for good, better, best nutritional content, with three stars denoting the best. Trans fat, saturated fats, cholesterol, added sugar and sodium impact the ratings.
UNH dining halls began using the symbol in 2009.
