Blasting Begins for New Business College
Blasting will begin for the Paul College of Business and Economics on Garrison Avenue Thursday, June 23, and will continue (off and on) throughout much of the summer. Associated drilling, which is loud and can be annoying, is already underway.
The blasting procedures include:
1. Drilling from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.
2. Blasting from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday-Friday.
3. Generally, all blasts will occur at or near the top of the hour; however, exceptions may occur if/as necessary.
4. All blasts will be monitored with engineering seismographs.
5. Blasting signals will be sounded for each blast, as follows:
WARNING SIGNAL: Three (3) long horns five (5) minutes prior to detonation
BLAST SIGNAL: Two (2) long horns one (1) minute prior to detonation
ALL CLEAR SIGNAL: One (1) prolonged horn immediately after detonation

Demolition of several buildings on Garrison Avenue is under way as UNH moves forward with building the new Peter T. Paul College of Business and Economics. Crews are tearing down Schofield House now, and will soon move on to Verrette and Grant houses. Batchellor House was demolished earlier this week, and Hersey House came down in the spring.

Reminder: Turn in Your Faculty/Staff Tuition Benefit Forms
Please turn in your Faculty/Staff tuition waivers to Business Services by July 8, 2011 in order to show on your student’s bill.
Undergraduate tuition bills will be posted July 11, 2011 and are due August 4, 2011.

Cardiac Rehabilitation and Exercise Programs
Faculty and staff who are 45 years old and older and with risk factors for cardiovascular disease (including high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, obesity, smoking, and/or a sedentary lifestyle) can participate in a cardiac prevention program at the Field House. The $150 cost includes an assessment, an individually prescribed exercise program, and 18 guided and monitored group exercise sessions. Individuals can then continue with exercise sessions for $5 per session.
Sessions begin July 11, 2011, and run Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 6:20 a.m. to 7:30 a.m.; participants can enroll throughout the summer. Facilities include indoor and outdoor tracks, gymnasium, and the employee fitness center, which has a variety of exercise equipment.

The University of New Hampshire Police Department’s Division of Emergency Management urges everyone to please be careful while walking and driving around campus. There are many construction projects underway that effect roadways, the interior and exterior of buildings, and sidewalks. Awareness is the key to accident prevention!
End of Fiscal Year Reminder for Donations
The university’s fiscal year ends June 30, 2011. Any donations received by departments should reach the Records Department at the Elliott Alumni Center no later than the close of business June 29, 2011, to be processed in FY11. Human Resources Offers Additional Training in PACES
The Office of Human Resources is conducting more in-depth demonstrations on the use of PACES (the on-line Position, Advertising, Classification and Evaluation System). The session will cover how to: view your most current position description, update it, complete on-line performance evaluation forms, and post job openings. The sessions are open to all employees. Energy Task Force Urges Cooling Awareness
With the start of warmer weather, the UNH Energy Task Force offers friendly reminders about air conditioning, windows and doors in our work space. Campus policy requires that air conditioners be set to achieve no lower than 76 degree temperature in the area. This normally means any window air conditioners be set at 75 degrees to achieve comfortable temperatures further removed from the specific units. When an AC unit is running in an open area, windows in that area should not be opened. If you are located in an office with a door and wish to open your window while an AC unit is running nearby, please keep your door closed. At the end of the day, please be aware of any open windows and/or running AC units and deal with them appropriately. It costs UNH more than $14 million annually to heat, cool, and power the campus, so it is important to use our energy wisely. Thank you and have a great summer.
Blackboard Upgrade Coming July 10
UNH IT will upgrade Blackboard 9.0 to version 9.1 on Sunday, July 10, 2011. This date falls after the completion of both the Spring 2011 semester and the end of the first summer session. Blackboard 9.1 is an incremental upgrade that improves on the redesigned interface of version 9.0 and includes many fixes and refinements. Be sure to take advantage of preview opportunities IT Academic Technology will offer throughout the spring semester. In addition, IT Academic Technology will be offering training and updates. New Training Requirement for IRB Applicants
The UNH Institutional Review Board for the Protection of Human Subjects in Research (IRB) is instituting a training requirement for any individual who submits an application for approval to use human subjects in research. Effective Sept. 1, 2011, applications to the UNH IRB must include for the project director (applicant) documentation of completion of the UNH Web-based training on human subjects protections*. The UNH IRB will not review applications missing this documentation. (IRB application materials will be revised in the late summer of 2011 to reflect this requirement.)
The training module takes approximately 30 minutes, and is available at http://www.unh.edu/rcr/HumSubj-Title.htm. Individuals who certify their completion of the module at the end will receive an email containing the necessary documentation to be submitted as part of the IRB application after Sept. 1, 2011.

Follow Construction on Campus with Map
You can keep track of summer construction projects on campus with a new Web-based map http://facarcgis2.unh.edu/fdc_construction.htm. The map shows construction sites, lay down areas, construction fences and impacts to sidewalks and roadways. It will be updated on a regular basis throughout the summer.
Throughout the summer a link to the map will be on the UNH map page as well as on the Energy and Campus Development home page and Facilities Design and Construction page.
MUB Copy Center Summer Hours
The MUB Copy Center will be closed from May 23 through Aug. 12 and will reopen on Monday, Aug. 15. During this time, Printing and Mailing Services will be shifting all work to the West Edge facility and expect to maintain the level of service the UNH community has grown accustomed to.
Projects may be submitted to the online order site http://www.printing.unh.edu/index.html , e-mailed to email@example.com, dropped off at the West Edge office, or you may call 2-0537 to arrange for the project to be picked up. The West Edge office is open Monday through Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Drop in at the MUB for Yoga
Drop-in yoga classes will be offered at the MUB, room 334, Thursdays, noon to 1p.m. during the month of May and June, with the exception of June 23. Open to all levels. $ $5 per class. Bring a yoga mat and wear comfortable clothing. A few mats may be provided.
Harvard Pilgrim subscribers can obtain a receipt after each class to submit for reimbursement (up to $200 per calendar year) through the Harvard Pilgrim Wellness Connection program. Offered by Healthy UNH and Campus Recreation.
2011 Defer Pay Deadline Aug. 8
Each year, academic year faculty and flex-time exempt status employees (PAT) who are in continuing status appointments (per HR policy F.10.22), can elect to receive their payment between the dates of their appointment or spread (defer pay) them out during a 12 month period (26 biweekly payments). New appointments are set up to pay between the dates of the appointment year and will continue as such until the employee elects otherwise. If the employee makes no election, payment will occur during the dates of their appointment year.
The election of the payment choice requires the completion of the USNH defer pay selection/change form. If you are not making a change to your current payment choice, there is nothing you need to do. If you are making a change, you will need to complete the USNH defer pay selection/change form and return it to the Office of Human Resources, 2 Leavitt Lane, by noon, Aug.8, 2011. Any form received after the deadline will not be accepted. Download the form.
Government regulations do not permit an individual to change the election once the payment year has begun.
Two options exist to assist an employee to prepare for the nonwork summer period.
- An employee may receive their pay during the appointment period and use a self-directed fixed direct deposit allotment of their choosing to a savings account. This allows the employee to self-manage their money, making the amount that has been set aside available for them to use during the summer months. This is the method recommend by USNH as it provides payment while the work is being performed, retains control and access to saved monies in an account of the employee’s choosing, and allows the employee to have access to their saved money.
- Another option available would be to use Banner-HR “defer” pay method. This option would defer a portion of pay to a non-interest earning account and used for payment during the summer payout period. This option does not provide flexibility as the deferred salary is not available to the employee, no matter the situation or need to have access sooner.

WeightWatchers at Work
Weekly WeightWatchers meetings will take place Thursdays, through July 28, noon to 12:45 p.m. All meetings except for June 23 will be in the MUB but the room changes so check the HR Training and Events Calendar, the MUB information desk or the list posted on the wall next to the MUB information desk for the location each week.
Join anytime during the series; rates will be prorated. Open to all UNH employees.

Ask an Advocate - Free Online Service for the UNH Community
Ask an Advocate is a free online service available to the UNH community that provides information, support and referrals for survivors of sexual violence, relationship abuse and stalking.
Anyone who has a question about themselves, a friend, a student, a colleague, or a family member, can complete an online form. After the form is submitted, a trained Sexual Harassment and Rape Prevention Program (SHARPP) advocate will reply within 24 hours.
Questions asked through Ask an Advocate will be answered Monday through Friday between 8:30 a.m. and 4 p.m. except when the university is officially closed for holidays or weather emergencies.

Massage Therapy at Health Services

Confidential HIV Counseling/Testing
Health Services provides a confidential HIV counseling/testing clinic on Thursdays from 11:30 a.m.–1:30 p.m. $25 per test, get results in 20 minutes. No appointment needed.
The Resource Library at Health Services contains thousands of resources on health and wellness and is available to all current UNH students, faculty and staff. The library is open Monday – Friday from 7:30 a.m.–4:30 p.m. and is located in Health Services on the second floor.
Career Development Grants
Career development grants are available from the American Association of University Women Educational Foundation to support women who hold a bachelor's degree and are preparing to advance their careers, change careers, or re-enter the work force. Special consideration is given to women of color, and women pursuing their first advanced degree or credentials in nontraditional fields.
Grants provide support for course work beyond a bachelor's degree, including a master's degree, second bachelor's degree, or specialized training in technical or professional fields. Funds are available for distance learning. Course work must be taken at an accredited two- or four-year college or university in the United States, or at a technical school that is fully licensed or accredited by the U.S. Department of Education. Funds are not available for PhD-level work. Grants range from $2,000 to $12,000 for one year.

Lactation Room Available
Dimond Library and the UNH President’s Commission on the Status of Women would like to call attention to a lactation room that is available in Dimond Library. This private room contains a hospital-grade Medela breast pump, a gliding rocker, a refrigerator, and soft music. The room is designed for nursing and milk expression.
