COLSA, NH Agricultural Experiment Station Host Research Field Days

July 20, 2011

The New Hampshire Agricultural Experimental Station (NHAES) and College of Life Sciences and Agriculture (COLSA) are hosting research field days Thursday, Aug. 4 and Monday, Aug. 22, 2011. The events, free and open to the public, highlight the research, teaching and extension activities at these facilities. Farm staff, faculty scientists, students, Cooperative Extension personnel and others will present and discuss their work.

The Aug. 4 event is at the Fairchild Dairy Teaching and Research Center from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The Aug. 22 event, at the Woodman Horticultural Farm from 4 to 7 p.m., coincides with a UNH Cooperative Extension Twilight Tour.

“These two field days provide agricultural producers and anyone interested in local agriculture an opportunity to explore these excellent facilities and visit with the researchers, students and staff,” says interim NHAES director Jon Wraith, who is also interim dean of COLSA.

At the Fairchild Dairy, research presentations will address cow fertility and health and calf nutrition. At Woodman Farm, visitors will learn about sweet potato, summer squash, tomato, broccoli and strawberry research.

Fairchild Dairy Teaching and Research Center is located on O’Kane Road, off of Mast Road Extension. The Woodman Farm is at 70 Spinney Lane, off of Mast Road Extension. Maps and directions for each facility are on the NHAES website at http://www.colsa.unh.edu/aes/facilities.

The NH Agricultural Experiment Station is housed within the College of Life Sciences and Agriculture at UNH, and supports research, teaching and outreach related to sustainable agriculture, forestry and associated natural resources. The NHAES was established in 1887 as an integral part of the UNH land grant mission.
