Single Stream Recycling is Coming to UNH!

Facilities Operations and Maintenance along with representatives from the Office of Sustainability, Housing, Residential Life, Facilities Design and Construction and Waste Management will implement a trial single stream recycling initiative Aug. 15-Dec.15, 2011.

Single stream recycling allows plastics, aluminum, cardboard and paper to be co-mingled for collection and removal from campus. Sorting will take place off site. A review will take place after the trial to see if the practice will be instituted across the entire campus.

Container Preparation

  • Remove all plastic bags

  • Remove any non-acceptable items

  • Flatten containers whenever possible

  • Cardboard should be broken down to fit inside the container without jamming and will empty completely

  • All containers (jars, bottles, cartons, etc.) must be rinsed and free of all contaminants

  • Remove and discard all corks, tops, rings, metal bottleneck wraps, and unacceptable items

Single Stream Recycling Guidelines

MIXED PAPER Examples:

Not Acceptable Items:

Paper (all - colored, glossy)

Paper towels, facial tissues, napkins

Mail and envelopes (windows are OK)

Candy wrappers

Magazines and catalogs

Cigarette packs

Paper bags

Waxed or plastic-coated paper

Paperback books

Foil wrapping paper

Greeting cards/ wrapping paper

Shredded paper (place in paper bag)

THIN CARDBOARD Examples:

Not Acceptable Items:

Food boxes (cereal, pasta, frozen food, etc.)

Boxes with silver or foil coating

Boxes (shipping, shoes, tissue, laundry detergent etc.)

Dirty, greasy or plastic-coated

Toilet paper rolls

Paper egg cartons (clean)

Soda cartons

CORRUGATED CARDBOARD Examples:

Not Acceptable Items:

Boxes (flattened and folded to fit in the cart)

Dirty or greasy cardboard

Pizza boxes (clean-remove greasy pizza liner)

TIN/ALUMINUM Examples:

Not Acceptable Items:

Aluminum and tin cans (rinsed)

Hypodermic needles (contact Health Dept for disposal)

Foil and pie plates (clean)

Paint cans

Wire clothes hangers

Scrap metal

GLASS BOTTLES / JARS Examples:

Not Acceptable Items:

Food jars (rinsed - salsa, mayonnaise, baby food etc)

Broken glass

Wine / beer bottles (rinsed)

Cups, dishes, crystal, ceramics

Vinegar bottles (rinsed)

Mirrors, glass windows

Light bulbs

PLASTIC CONTAINERS Examples:

Not Acceptable Items:

Plastic containers w/symbols 1- 7 on the bottom

Plastic shopping bags

Soda and juice bottles (rinsed)

Styrofoam

Shampoo bottles (rinsed)

Plastic food wrap, potato chip and sandwich bags

Food bottles (rinsed – salad dressing, ketchup etc.)

Automotive fluid bottles (oil, antifreeze, etc.)

Cleaner containers (rinsed – window, dish soap etc.)

Milk and water jugs (rinsed)

Saline solution bottles

Detergent/fabric softener/bleach bottles (rinsed)

MILK CARTONS, DRINK BOXES Examples:

Not Acceptable Items:

Milk, cream and juice cartons (rinsed)

Ice cream containers

Milk and juice boxes (rinsed)
