A Message from Ben Thompson (by way of Ginny Stuart)
April 20, 2011
I may be dead, but I'm on Facebook! I'm turning 205 on April 22, and a lot of people are celebrating already and entering a drawing on the UNH Alumni Facebook page. The birthday greetings have been pouring in--more than 200 of them so far. They've wished me happy birthday in German and in binary code, and one alum even wrote me a poem. Another one wrote: "I gave many a tour from your eponymous building as an undergrad!"
And I say that's exactly why I willed it all* to UNH--so the sons and daughters of New Hampshire, and beyond, could learn some good vocab like "eponymous" along with their agriculture and mechanic arts.
I know all you folks on campus are especially fond of UNH, so I wanted to invite you to wish me happy birthday, too, at http://www.facebook.com/unhalumni . While you're there, feel free to give me some advice on what to do with my hair for the occasion, seeing as how I've had the same hair for, like, 120 years. :-/
See you there!
* My estate was worth $400,000 when I died in 1890, mostly in railroad stocks and bonds—that's more than $9 million in today's dollars. Not too shabby for a New Hampshire farmer. Just sayin'.
