Search Committee Formed for New Director of Carsey
October 27, 2010
Provost John Aber has announced the creation of a search committee for the new director of the Carsey Institute. This is the first step in the important process to recruit, review, and recommend candidates for the next director.
“Our goal will be to appoint an individual who will continue and expand upon the excellent leadership provided by Mil Duncan during the past six years,” Aber said.
The search committee includes the following members:
Mark Ducey Professor of forest biometrics and management
Andrew Houtenville Associate professor of economics; research director, Institute on Disability
Kenneth Johnson Senior demographer, Carsey Institute; professor of sociology
Peter Lamb USNH board of trustees
Jan Nisbet (chair) Senior vice provost for research
Lisa Townson Assistant director of programs, Cooperative Extension
Sally Ward Interim dean, UNH Manchester; professor of sociology
Melissa Wells Assistant professor, department of social work
The director of the Carsey Institute will have a demonstrated commitment to the educational, scholarly, research and engagement missions of UNH; provide dynamic leadership to strengthen interdisciplinary research programs on vulnerable families, healthy communities and sustainable development, nationally and internationally; and develop new research areas of excellence that build on the strength of the university’s faculty. The director will be a prominent scholar in the social sciences or health fields with a commitment to policy and applied interdisciplinary research in areas of children, families and communities.
The director sits on the provost’s council and will have a dual reporting line to the deans of the College of Liberal Arts and the College of Health and Human Services. The director will demonstrate high academic standards; strong, visionary leadership; effective management of personnel, services, budget, advancement efforts; and effective communication skills necessary for strategic leadership and productive, collegial relationships.
The search committee will determine finalists for campus interviews and make final recommendations to Dean Barbara Arrington (CHHS), to Dean Ken Fuld (COLA), and John Aber. Wanda Mitchell, vice provost for faculty development and inclusive excellence, will work closely with the committee to develop a strong and diverse pool of internal and external candidates, through both formal and informal means.
