UNH's Chief Diversity Officer Appointed to Commission

The Association of Public and Land-grant Universities’ (APLU) Commission on Access, Diversity, and Excellence (CADE) has appointed Wanda Mitchell, vice provost and chief diversity officer at UNH, to serve a two-year term (2010-2012) as a regional representative for New England states. CADE is committed to serving as a national action forum for addressing relevant diversity and social change issues impacting learning, discovery, and engagement at American colleges and universities. 

As a regional representative, Mitchell will be an ex officio member of the commission’s executive committee, and will ensure that the 11 New England higher education institutions and units are engage with and kept abreast of CADE initiatives and emerging national issues.

“Dr. Mitchell is a strong and effective voice for inclusive excellence on campus and off,” said Provost John Aber. “She has had real impact on the culture and environment here at UNH, and these appointments attest to her impact at the national level as well. With the emphasis on inclusive excellence in our new strategic plan, her role and influence will be extended into new areas relating to faculty and staff recruitment, development and mentoring.” 

CADE’s purpose is to develop and maintain a comprehensive agenda for APLU regarding public higher education and the compelling issues of:

  • Broadening access and opportunity in the academic community
  • Utilizing diversity to expand the range and quality of the undergraduate experience
  • Achieving excellence and enhancing diversity within student and faculty populations
  • Creating partnerships between public universities and their communities to bring about beneficial social change

Mitchell was also recently elected as the second vice president of the National Association of Diversity Officers in Higher Education (NADOHE).  She has served on the board of directors of this organization since its inception in 2007. 

NADOHE is the principal organization of chief and senior diversity officers at institutions of higher education. The association was established in response to the growing need for higher education to leverage and maximize investments in diversity initiatives, provide opportunities for cross institutional exchange and fertilization of ideas and enhance professional standards among diversity workers.
