Beat the Heat at Outdoor Pool or Mendum's Pond

The UNH outdoor pool is open seven days a week through Sept. 1.

Whether you want to be in the water or on it, Campus Recreation can help you keep cool this summer.

Here on campus, there’s the outdoor pool, which is open to the public. At its deepest point, the 1.8 million gallon pool is 10 feet deep. The shallow end is described as having zero-depth entry, which means it’s like being at the beach where you go from the water covering your feet to increased depth.

Built in 1939 as part of the Works Project Administration (part of President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s New Deal to put people back to work), the pool has five swimming areas: salmon, perch, shark, whale, and lap lanes. The minnow area is about 3 feet deep. There is also a diving area.

A day pass is $7 (ages 3 to adult). Punch cards are available at $25 for 5 visits; $50 for 10. A ‘dash pass’ for those who want to swim after 5 p.m. is $70 for the season. For other seasonal rates visit http://campusrec.unh.edu/index.cfm?id=9469C09F-A1A4-B8C9-C63BED04BE4B13D0.

The pool is open seven days a week from noon to 7 p.m. through Aug. 15. On Aug. 16, the closing time shifts to 6 p.m. through Sept. 1.

Visitors to the outdoor recreation area at Mendum’s Pond on the Little River in Barrington can take a swim (at your own risk; there aren’t any lifeguards), rent a canoe, kayak or paddleboat, lounge on the beach or take a hike through the woods.

There is also a playground and covered picnic spot.

A day pass is $5 for adults; $3 for children five and under; benefited faculty and staff, summer students and children under five get in free (take your UNH ID). Season passes also are available. For rates and boat rental fees visit http://campusrec.unh.edu/index.cfm?ID=85080655-ABC8-6866-55F698305C9557DE.

No pets or alcohol allowed.

Mendum’s Pond recreation area is open Tuesday - Sunday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. until Aug. 23. It will be closed Aug. 24 – Aug. 27 for the UNH PAWS program, an outdoor pre-orientation program for incoming students.

From Aug. 28 – Sept. 25, Mendum’s Pond is open weekends, noon to 6 p.m.
