When an intentionally-set fire destroyed the UNH sailing team’s boathouse and 55 boats earlier this year, the coach and student leaders vowed to keep going. Borrowed boats got them back in the water. There are plans to rebuild the boathouse. And now, the coach of a competitor is setting out to help them do both.
On Saturday, Aug. 28, Brad Churchill, coach of the Boston University sailing team, will in-line skate for 24 hours from Boston to Durham and back, in an effort to raise money for the UNH club.
Churchill is taking one-time pledges or donations per mile. All of the proceeds will benefit the UNH sailing team.
“This is truly a gesture of love and commitment for us certainly, but it also speaks volumes about the sailing community at large,” say Denny Bryne, director of Campus Recreation. “We are thrilled at this support and wish Brad well. We thank him and SailWorld.com for their generous coverage of this event.”
The BU coach will skate more than 120 miles as he travels up the coast of Massachusetts and New Hampshire. He’ll start on Bennington Street in Boston and make his way through Winthrop, Revere Beach Parkway, Lynn, Swampscott, Salem, Beverly, Wenham, Hamilton, Ipswich, Rowley, Newbury Old Town, Newbury, Newburyport, Salisbury Beach and Hampton Beach.
In North Hampton he’ll take Route 111 west (Atlantic Avenue) to Route 151 north (Post Road) to Winnicut Road, and from there, Route 33 west to Route 108 north to Bay Road to Durham to Whittemore Center.
And then he’ll head back.
The sailing club is in the process of purchasing new boats (about $6,800 each) to host an event scheduled for Family Weekend Sept. 24-26. (While the building was insured, the contents were not.)
“We are currently about $22,000 short on the total of $90,000 for the boats, and about $32,000 short on money for the boathouse,” Byrne says. “We are proceeding as if we have the money as timing is a large part of this puzzle with construction needing to be complete prior to the first snowfall.”
