Build a Sailboat in a Weekend Workshop
March 11, 2009
Spring has arrived, and with it the UNH marine docents’ ninth annual Family Boat-Building Workshop. During the weekend workshop, six families will have an opportunity to make a boat while making memories.
Eligible families must include one or two adults and children age 12 or older. No prior woodworking experience is required, but participants should have basic skills using hand tools. An experienced docent boat builder will assist each family.
Space is limited; applications due by April 15. The $950 program fee includes all of the boat-building materials and a professionally made sail. Each family will build a 12-foot sailboat, which can safely carry a family of three for a day on quiet water.
Participants will meet Thursday night, May 14, for an overview of the project and a discussion of the habitat and wildlife of the Great Bay Estuary. Construction will take place Friday through Sunday, May 15-17, at Kingman Farm in Madbury.
The marine docents are a group of trained volunteers dedicated to the preservation and wise use of marine resources. They are sponsored by Cooperative Extension and N.H. Sea Grant.
