Military Mental Health Worker Headlines Social Work Event March 25

The department of social work marks Social Work Month Wednesday, March 25, with a presentation by military social worker Andrew Young ’85, lieutenant commander in the Third Medical Group, Elmendorf Air Force Base in Anchorage.

“Not only is military social work a growing source of employment for social workers, the topic of the mental health of our soldiers is gaining national attention,” says Jerry Marx, associate professor of social work and chair of the department of social work at UNH.

In his current position, Young supervises all mental health clinical staff treating children of active duty personnel. He also provides clinical services for combat-related post-traumatic stress disorder. Young previously served as a psychotherapist at Sheppard Air Force Base in Texas and has held a range of civilian clinical and supervisory positions. Young, who has a master of social work and a Ph.D., is a graduate of the social work department at UNH.
